Toxic sunscreens have become a growing concern as more research highlights the potential dangers associated with certain chemical ingredients commonly found in these products. Ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate are often used for their UV-blocking properties, but they can also pose health risks. Oxybenzone, for instance, has been linked to hormone disruption and allergic reactions. Studies suggest that these chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream, leading to potential long-term effects on human health, including developmental and reproductive toxicity.
To mitigate the risks associated with toxic sunscreens, consumers are encouraged to choose mineral-based sunscreens that use zinc oxide as the active ingredient. These minerals act as physical barriers, reflecting UV rays rather than absorbing them, and are much safer for both human health and the environment. Additionally, wearing protective clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding peak sun hours can further reduce the need for potentially harmful sunscreens, allowing individuals to enjoy the sun responsibly and sustainably. Remember, our bodies NEED the natural Vitamin D that only the sun can provide. Catch 10 minutes of unadulterated sun in the morning hours. After that, apply your natural sunscreen to protect against skin cancer and overexposure.
Recently, I began making my own sunscreen. I am no longer buying store bought sunscreen because the additives and ingredients are just too dangerous to our health. Plus, it is much cheaper!

While we can't control everything that life throws at us, we can take steps to be wiser and smarter with what we eat, drink and put on and in our bodies. These are the only bodies we get this side of Heaven, so let's do our very best to take care of them. Until next time.........
